Volunteer Diver

Dive in the Red Sea among live coral, eagle rays, and exquisite fish. As a member of the Aquarium's dive team, you can explore this habitat and much more! Volunteer divers assist staff with exhibit maintenance and dive programs for Aquarium guests.

Candidates must be:

  • 18 years or older
  • Certified for Open Water SCUBA diving with an accredited agency (PADI, NAUI, SSI, etc.)
  • Confirmed with a minimum of 20 logged dives, with two occurring in the past 12 months
  • Physician cleared to dive
  • Able to lift 50 pounds, and physical fit enough to remove themselves from the water

Candidates must be available to attend the Watermanship Skills Assessment scheduled for Saturday, September 27 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Please note that only four new divers will be selected; therefore, not all applicants will be interviewed, and participation in the assessment does not guarantee a placement.

Skills tested will include:

  • 200-yard swim in less than 8 minutes
  • 25-yard breath hold swim with mask and fins
  • 10-minute tread
  • 25-yard tired diver tow
  • Gear set up, dawning, and adjustment
  • Proper descent and controlled ascent
  • Neutral buoyancy and maneuverability underwater
  • Underwater signal communication
  • Mask removal and replacement while neutral
  • Regulator recovery while neutral
  • Air depletion and alternate air source use
  • Controlled emergency swimming ascent (CESA)
  • Unconscious diver recovery

A minimum of six dives every six months and at least one surface support shift every six months. Volunteers must commit to a one-year term following introductory training. Shifts are generally four hours, from 8:00am to 12:00pm., Sunday through Saturday. There may be an occasional afternoon or evening shift.
