Animal Facts Inspired by SpongeBob

A pink sea star on an exhibit window, underside exposed.

Sea Star

Sea stars like Patrick eat bivalves like mussels and clams. They expel their stomachs through their mouths and digest their food outside of their bodies!

A blue crab perched on a rock in its exhibit.

Blue Crab

The underside of a blue crab is called an apron. Male blue crabs have an apron that resembles the Washington Monument. Females will have an apron shaped like a pyramid when they are young and as they mature the apron looks like the Capitol Building.

A whelk, or sea snail.

Snail

Snails belong to the class Gastropod. These animals have a large muscular foot and a spiral shell that grows as they do. Whelks are the local species of sea snail.

Marvin the porcupine puffer.

Porcupine Puffer

Porcupine pufferfish will gulp air or water to increase their size. This makes them appear larger and less appealing to eat.

A cuttlefish near the sand in its exhibit.

Cuttlefish

Cuttlefish and octopus use chromatophores (cells that produce color) to instantly change their colors to hide from predators.

Frontal view of a flounder swimming.

Flounder

Flounders are born with eyes on either side of their head, but one moves to the other side as they mature. The flounder lies flat on the sand and looks up and around for predators and prey.
